Woodturning

Woodturning classes can be taken for many reasons. The art and craft of turning wood is both artistic and therapeutic. It's a way to go back to the roots and uses your body, mind, and hands. A class is easy to take and requires very little equipment. Michael Roper, a woodturning instructor, is an excellent resource to learn the basics of this art.

Hourly classes can be booked at $40 per hour for a 1-hour session, or $30 for two-person classes. Three-person classes are a bit more costly but you can always invite a friend, family member or colleague. Hourly classes are great for locals, those with tight schedules, and people who have commitment issues. Bandsaw Box

Building a Bandsaw Box for woodworkers is a fantastic project. It is a great opportunity to build a bandsaw safely. Tom Wilson is a retired Industrial Arts teacher and teaches the class. He's also built many student-built bandsaw boxes. For this project you will need a 6” blank and some cardstock.

Before you start cutting, mark the grain using a pencil. Next, draw a line to follow it. After you have found the grain, move straight up towards the box. Next, you will need to cut the carcass in exactly the same direction. This will ensure that you don't have large pieces of wood one side. You'll then have a round box that is easy to stack and store away.

Bandsaw Spindle

Many woodworkers have little or no understanding of how to properly set up their bandsaw. They may not know to align the blade, or how to properly set the guide blocks and thrust bearing. All these factors have an impact on the performance of your bandsaw. Use a large bandsaw blade to get straight cuts. A larger blade will cut through thicker material faster. The blade's number of teeth also influences the quality and efficiency of cuts. A bandsaw blade with more teeth will produce a finer cut.

Bandsaw blades come with a variety thicknesses. The stiffer and straighter your cut will become, the thicker the band. Thicker bands are more susceptible for stress cracking, but they can also breakage easily. This means that you will need a larger saw wheel. The ideal blade thickness should be between 4-6 inches. Then, change the direction of the cuts using a blade holder.

Hand carved bowls

Hand-carving bowls can be difficult. However, by taking the time to study the materials, tools, as well the woodworking process, you will be able build beautiful bowls for many decades to come. Ron Pickens a retired educator grew up near Pickens in South Carolina. He earned a BA in Social Studies from Wofford College and an MAT from Converse College. After serving in the United States Army, he retired from Pickens High School as a Captain in 1999. In his free time, Ron enjoys woodworking and enjoys teaching carving classes at Holly Springs Center.

Students will learn about wood carving basics, and how to use traditional wooden hand tools to carve various designs. Hand carving techniques and tools directly affect the shape and function a bowl. This traditional Scandinavian tradition can be seen in the simplicity of hand-crafted bowls. Students will be able to proudly display their handiwork on the dining room table.

How To

How to make wood joints

This tutorial will show how to join 2 pieces of wood together. We'll use the "pocket hole joint," which means we drill holes in the wood and then glue them together. If your wood has a straight grain, smooth surface, you can use this method. Try dowel joinery instead if your wood doesn't look straight. These are the steps

  1. Drill Pocket Hole Joints. Measure and mark the location where you would like to place the pocket hole joint. With a handheld drill machine or jig saw, drill 3/4-inch deep holes in the ends of each piece.
  2. Sand Smooth. The wood's edges can be sanded to prevent splitting.
  3. Glue Together Apply glue on both sides of the wooden plank. Allow the wood to rest for five minutes before clamping it together.
  4. Secure the pieces together. After the glue has dried properly, clamp the pieces together to make sure they are flush.
  5. Trim Joinery. After the glue dries, trim any excess wood around your joint.

To be able to turn the pieces inside-out, leave enough room between them.
